Why You'd Want to Resize a Pattern in the First Place
You found a pattern you love, but your swatch refuses to match the gauge it calls for. Maybe you're using a yarn that's a touch thicker or thinner than the pattern's recommendation, or maybe your personal tension just runs looser or tighter than the designer's. Ripping out and re-swatching with a different needle size can help, but sometimes you'd rather keep the yarn and needles you already have and adjust the numbers instead.
The good news is that you don't need to be a math person to do this. There's a straightforward ratio calculation that lets you scale a pattern's stitch and row counts to match whatever gauge you're actually getting. It won't magically fix every pattern — some shapes handle the conversion better than others — but for a huge number of projects, it's the fastest route from "close enough" gauge to a garment or accessory that fits the way it should.
The Core Idea: Gauge Is a Ratio
A gauge swatch tells you how many stitches and rows fit into a set measurement, usually 4 inches (or 10 centimeters). A pattern written at "20 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches" is really just saying: for every 20 stitches you knit, you'll cover 4 inches of width, at that specific tension.
If your own gauge is different, the *number* of stitches needed to cover the same physical distance changes too — but the relationship between "stitches per inch" and "inches of fabric" stays proportional. That proportionality is what lets you convert. You're not guessing; you're solving a simple ratio, the same kind you probably last used in a middle school word problem.
The Formula
Here's the calculation, in plain terms:
New stitch count = Original stitch count × (Your gauge ÷ Pattern's gauge)
The same logic applies to row counts, using your row gauge and the pattern's row gauge instead of stitch gauge:
New row count = Original row count × (Your row gauge ÷ Pattern's row gauge)
"Gauge" here means stitches (or rows) per inch — or per 4 inches, as long as you're consistent on both sides of the equation. The units cancel out, which is why this works regardless of whether the pattern lists gauge over 1 inch, 4 inches, or 10 centimeters, so long as you compare like with like.
Why This Works
Think of it as cross-multiplication between two ratios that both describe the same physical width or length:
- Pattern's ratio: pattern stitch count is to pattern gauge as the finished width is to some known measurement.
- Your ratio: your new stitch count is to your gauge as that same finished width is to that same known measurement.
Because the finished measurement is the constant both knitters are aiming for, you can rearrange the two ratios into the formula above and solve directly for the number you don't know: your new stitch or row count.
A Worked Example
Let's put real numbers to it. Say a pattern for a simple garter-stitch scarf calls for:
- Pattern gauge: 18 stitches and 24 rows over 4 inches
- Pattern instructions: cast on 36 stitches, knit until the piece measures 60 inches, then bind off
You swatch with your yarn and needles and get a slightly denser fabric:
- Your gauge: 20 stitches and 26 rows over 4 inches
To find your new cast-on number:
- Divide your gauge by the pattern's gauge: 20 ÷ 18 = 1.111
- Multiply that by the original stitch count: 36 × 1.111 = 40 stitches
So you'd cast on 40 stitches instead of 36, and your scarf will come out the intended width even though your tension is tighter than the pattern's.
If a section of the pattern were written in rows rather than inches — say, "work 300 rows" instead of "knit until piece measures 60 inches" — you'd apply the same idea to your row gauge:
- Divide your row gauge by the pattern's row gauge: 26 ÷ 24 = 1.083
- Multiply by the original row count: 300 × 1.083 = 325 rows
You'd knit roughly 325 rows to reach the same finished length. In practice, many patterns give length in inches rather than a fixed row count specifically so you can just measure as you go, which sidesteps the row-gauge math entirely — one more reason it's worth checking your row gauge along with your stitch gauge before you assume a rewrite is even necessary.
Rounding Sensibly
Real knitting rarely lands on a perfectly round number, and that's fine. Round to whatever the stitch pattern requires — a multiple of 4 for a lace repeat, an even number for k1p1 ribbing, a multiple of the cable repeat plus edge stitches, and so on. A stitch or two of difference from the "pure" math almost never affects the finished result, but landing on a number that breaks your stitch pattern definitely will.
When This Method Works Well
The ratio method shines on projects built from simple, unshaped rectangles or gentle curves worked in one repeating stitch pattern:
- Scarves, cowls, and simple blankets
- Straight-sided tote bags or pillow covers
- Basic hats worked as a tube with minimal crown shaping
- Plain stockinette or garter panels within a larger project
For these, scaling every stitch and row count by the same ratio keeps the proportions of the finished piece intact, because there's little or no shaping logic to preserve.
When It Gets More Complicated
Fitted garments are a different story. A sweater with waist shaping, set-in sleeves, a curved neckline, or short-row shoulder shaping isn't just a rectangle scaled up or down — the *rate* of increases and decreases is doing real structural work, placing shaping at specific points to create curves that match a body. If you multiply every number in a shaped section by the same ratio without rethinking the shaping instructions themselves, you can end up with decreases that happen too fast or too slow, an armhole that's the wrong depth, or a neckline that gapes.
For those trickier sections, use the ratio method to get your starting stitch counts (cast-on, stitches at the underarm, stitches at the shoulder), but then re-plan the shaping rows using your own row gauge so the increases or decreases land at the right physical points on the body, not just at the same row numbers the original pattern used. It's more work, but it's the difference between a sweater that fits and one that technically matches the math but not your shoulders.
A Quick Sanity Check Before You Commit
Before casting on a full project with converted numbers, it's worth doing two things:
- Swatch again after converting, if the gauge difference is more than a stitch or two per 4 inches — larger adjustments can behave less predictably than the simple ratio suggests, especially in fabrics with drape or texture.
- Compare your converted numbers to a nearby size in the original pattern, if it's written for multiple sizes. If your math lands close to an existing size's stitch count, you may be able to simply knit that size as written instead of doing the conversion yourself — free error-checking, courtesy of the pattern's own grading.
Resizing for gauge takes a little arithmetic, but it's arithmetic you can trust once you understand why it works. Keep the ratio method in your back pocket, save your swatches, and you'll be able to make far more patterns fit the yarn you actually want to knit with.
