Yarn substitution is not about finding a label that says the same weight. Start with the fabric you need: springy or drapey, crisp or soft, warm or light.
Next, compare the original and candidate yarn by construction and fibre content. A smooth merino behaves differently from an airy alpaca blend even when their labels suggest a similar weight.
Finally, swatch the candidate yarn in the pattern stitch. Your swatch is the proof that the substitute is right for the project you want to make.
